If Once You Have Slept On An Island

If once you have slept on an island
You’ll never be quite the same;
You may look as you looked the day before
And go by the same old name.

Back Bedroom

You may bustle about in street and shop
You may sit at home and sew,
But you’ll see blue water and wheeling gulls
Wherever your feet may go.

You may chat with the neighbors of this and that
And close to your fire keep,
But you’ll hear ship whistle and lighthouse bell
And tides beat through your sleep.

Oh! you won’t know why and you can’t say how
Such a change upon you came,
But once you have slept on an island,
You’ll never be quite the same.

What guests can expect for an overnight stay on Seguin Island…

Accommodations in an authentic historic Maine lighthouse located on a remote island accessible only by boat (or helicopter) with unparalleled views for every on-island adventure.

Immerse yourself on modern day Seguin Island – experience the sights of ospreys, gulls and bald eagles, crashing waves, the Seguin foghorn, lobster boat engines, the on-island keepers telling tales and other visitors enjoying their experience.  A tour of the lighthouse is provided by the keepers.

Guest Quarters:  The guest quarters offer two upstairs bedrooms (downstairs is the museum and gift shop); one bedroom has 2 twin beds; the other has one twin and one double bed. There are minimal kitchen facilities in the adjoining hallway with a small microwave oven, coffee maker and a mini fridge available for your convenience.  A charcoal grill is provided for guests – no open fires are allowed on the island – cooking is limited to the grill.

There is a private bath on the second floor with hot and cold running water, a composting toilet and a shower.  The toilet comes with instructions but we encourage the use of the outhouse in the cove when possible.

Sheets, blankets and pillows are provided; sleeping bags are an option if you prefer to bring your own.  Bath towels are provided, but please bring towels if you intend to swim in the cove.  Brave the Maine ocean water temperatures – many do as part of the island experience!

Food – bring your own for breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks and drinking water.  You may want to bring a cooler to transport your food and provide you with additional space for ice/storage.     Please note:  in support of “leave no trace” we ask guests to take their trash with them upon their departure.

Recommended clothing – casual summer clothing (layers to adjust to the changing temperatures from sunrise to sunset with winds that change with the tides – rain gear if the forecast indicates even a chance of showers – appropriate footwear for your arrival by boat as your feet will get wet – hiking shoes/socks for the trek from the cove up to the lighthouse.

Transportation – Guests are responsible for making their own transportation arrangements to and from the island.  If arriving on your own boat, there are a limited number of moorings in the cove, anchoring is not allowed due to the underground cables.  Upon arrival to the island transportation from the mooring to the island is by dinghy.  Depending on the tide you can expect this to be a challenging part of the trip.  Be prepared to get your feet wet!  All of your food and clothing should be in waterproof containers/bags.  You will need to carry your supplies from the cove to the lighthouse – keep in mind you will be climbing over rocks in the cove, then upstairs to get to the base of the lighthouse trail which leads you to the top of the island. The trail is steep and can be slippery when wet. Take your time and enjoy the scenery on your way up.

After securing your transport, FOSILS will need to be made aware of your finalized travel plans (arrival and departure details within 72 hours of your arrival).  Weather and seas may affect these plans as under certain conditions it may be too dangerous for travel (to get onto the island or once you are there, to depart from the island).  You will need to monitor the National Weather Service forecasts a few days prior to your stay and communicate with your source of transport and FOSILS.  If your stay is cancelled due to weather your donation can be applied to a future reservation.

At the end of your stay, please collect used linens in a pillowcase and leave them at the bottom of the stairway. If needed, please give the guest quarters a quick sweep.

Thank you and enjoy!
